News … 2009 Annual General Meeting The Society's spring
programme opened on Wednesday, 11 March, when 45‑members attended the
26th Annual General Meeting. In the absence of the Chairman, who had suffered
a slight accident, our Secretary, Margaret Shepard, took the chair. After
apologies for absence, she read the minutes of last year's AGM, and John
Barnes gave his Treasurer's report for 2008; the Society showed a larger
surplus than 2007, and our investment account also increased. Margaret
Shepard gave the Secretary's report on last year's successful programme of
meetings and events, and then read the Chairman's report, which gave thanks
to the hard‑working officers and committee, and reported on the non‑programme
activities, such as our website and historic calendar most efficiently run by
Mike Rees, and Moreton History, our
displays in the library, care for Lord Sankey's grave and the growth in the
Society's archives. The officers and committee were re‑elected:
Chairman Guy Stapleton; Secretary Margaret Shepard; Treasurer John Barnes;
Programme Secretaries Ray Poulton and Paul Webber; Committee Ann Morgans, Mike
Rees and Jo Stanley. Tim Porter was re‑elected President, with
VicePresidents David Day, David Edwards and Rev Ralph Mann. The subscription
remained unchanged. The meeting was
followed by an excellent talk by one of our most popular speakers, Mornee Button,
showing and commenting on slides of Walls
and Stiles, Gates and Gateways in our area. She was warmly thanked by
Paul Webber. Iron Age and Roman Art in the Cotswolds On 8 April about 50 members and friends came to the Society's meeting to hear Dr Alison Brookes give an excellent talk on Iron Age and Roman Art in the Cotswolds, with illustrations of the unexpectedly beautiful pre‑Roman objects in the area. The Chairman expressed members' thanks. Committee The Committee met on
3 March at Milton House to consider the financial results for 2008 and to
discuss the winter programme for 2009/2010. CADHAS Exhibition The Chairman
accepted an invitation to attend the opening on 18 April of an exhibition in
Chipping Campden's Old Police Station to mark the 25th anniversary of the
Campden and District Historical and Archaeological Society. The exhibition on
18 and 19 April showed examples of its activities and achievements since
1984. Carol Jackson, its Vice‑President, said that “The
challenge is to continue and develop, with the same enthusiasm, interest and
vigour in research, lectures, outings, publications, education and archive
conserving.” As it for our Moreton Society. Phyllis Mary Edwards Our sympathies go to
our Vice‑President, Dr David Edwards, on the loss of his wife of many
years, Phyllis Mary Edwards (1922‑2009), who died in February. The
Society was represented at her funeral in St David's Church, Moreton, on 26
February. Library
Showcase The current display in
the Society's showcase in Moreton Library is Moreton Bottles Out! The previous exhibition was The London Road. Future Programme On 13 May Gail Stoten will give a talk on Salmonsbury Camp. The summer programme
opens on Thursday, 28 May, when we travel to Loughborough to visit the works
and museum of Taylors Fayre & Smith Ltd, one of only two firms still
casting bells. On Wednesday, 1 July, we visit the C18 Frampton Court at
Frampton on Severn with its Grade 1 listed park. Our annual visit to local
churches on Wednesday, 5 August, goes to the North Oxfordshire border ‑
St Giles at Bletchingdon, St Nicholas at Islip, St John the Baptist at
Stanton St John, and St Mary at Beckley. |
